Today, the death of Osama Bin Laden dominates our news outlets. Isolating children from the conversation is almost impossible. Avoiding your children’s questions will be equally as difficult.
Here are some thoughts on talking to young children and provide a basis for conversation with older children.
“Osama Bin Laden was a man who hurt people that didn’t share his beliefs. He hurt people all around the world. The United States has been trying to capture him so he couldn’t hurt anyone else. They looked for him a long time and never gave up. When they tried to arrest him he was shot and killed. Now he will not be able to hurt people anymore. It makes us happy that people will be safer.”
Although I certainly shed no tears for Osama Bin Laden, I think that celebrating the death of any person sends a confusing message to children. War is not a team sport; it is a tragedy of great proportion, even when necessary.
